Location and Geography
Chepo is a small town located in the province of Herrera, about an hour and a half by car from the city of Chitré. The area is famous for the Montoso Forest Preserve, created in 1977 and containing 10,500 hectares of land. There is a tremendous diversity of plant and wildlife in the preserve. The mountains in and around Chepo provide many beautiful views and opportunities for hikes.
Climate
Chepo is lucky to be at an altitude of 700 m above sea level, which gives it a year-round mild climate. The average temperature in Chepo ranges from a low of 20° C at night to a high of 29° C in the daytime. There is little variation between summer and winter. The dry season starts in the middle of December and lasts until the end of April. At this time the weather is sunny and very windy. The rest of the year is the rainy season. The rain increases gradually from May until October and November, when the largest amount of rain falls. But Chepo is also worth a visit in the rainy season because quite often it only rains for a couple of hours in the afternoon.
